Been noticing a flood of releases with next to no data, and not only from new users. Those entries are of no use to anyone.

DEVELOPERS - can there be a bit more data required than title and format?

Good suggestion. At least an Identifying Code needs to be mandatory to differentiate releases of the same film and format. Preferably the Barcode and Catalog Number, although the "type" is a free text field at the moment..

Also the Wiki is gone since last week's spamming. I hope it will be fixed soon, new users should have the proper guidelines to add a release (and I'm still using it myself when in doubt).

Agreed. Plus the issue of people using stock images (from online retail sites) still needs addressed.

I still wish the site had a draft function. I have to submit my submissions sometimes half-way through to return to them later (which I always try and do).

I have recently been adding items and then a few days later adding the image - scans as always of course.

This release has the wrong picture:

https://www.filmo.gs/release/158947-1941

On the image there is Dutch text and the region is "1". Not very likely that they sell Dutch DVD's in America.

A quick search by UPC and we find out - 1941 Collector's Edition. Most definitely NOT what is pictured.

The original Garbage Release user-type was the user that flooded the database simply to up his or her contribution totals. Still happens but this user has been mostly replaced by the "Seller" - viewing this site as a nothing more than a flea market and flooding the database with Garbage Releases. Saw that coming when users started crying about how they wanted a "marketplace." - Prediction: This will get even worse if and when a filmogs mobile app appears.

CIP program for filmogs is needed. NOW..

I just removed the image of the release. I know it's not the way it should be. Maybe one of the 2 "haves" can add a new image

AGAIN:

DEVELOPERS - can there be a bit more data required than title and format?

new user (just joined today) already has 18 releases, most with no associated images, with ONLY title and format.

CIP program for filmogs is needed. NOW..

I just came across a member who has contributed 766 items that have hardly any information. A couple of examples: https://www.filmo.gs/film/239142-quaratine and https://www.filmo.gs/release/239143-quaratine
Who is going to update these?

Who is going to update these?

Nobody knows....

Those do look pretty barebones indeed. Has anyone contacted the submitter? (history comments or update notes might be the best way). We will send them a note.

I guess maybe since those releases have barcodes they can be expanded upon by people who have the same releases? Or do we think they are too sparse to keep around?

All submissions by this user:
https://www.filmo.gs/users/franklefebvre

Also, aren't the pictures submitted to be of the movie you have at hand. Looks like the images are from online shops.

No kidding. This has been an issue for a long time now. Will anything be done?

Nobody knows...

I see this submitter has already come up, each submission seems to somehow be worse than the last https://www.filmo.gs/users/craig082

Thanks for looking out for these. I've made some edits to the Quarantine submissions, After The Sunset and a couple of others, and I've followed up with these users to add more detail to their subs. If we don't hear back or see any improvement on the submissions that are basically just a title and format, these will be removed, but I think the ones with identifying codes at least have the potential to be improved.
Regarding the issue with images, we do prefer original images, but also allow images available via CC0 or that fall within fair use

Here’s another one. Releases with almost no info. Films with no info. Just the title and a pic of the dvd or vhs release.
https://www.filmo.gs/users/xyz23jc

Thanks, I've made a few edits where possible and contacted both these users

xyz23jc Is creating a big mess with his film and release submissions. I’ve just tried to message him to improve his submissionsas well. Added links to wiki and suggested he should use the forums with questions

User's submissions are good except that none of the releases are linked to the films, could take a bit of time to edit all of them.

"None of the releases are linked to films" - So what? That does not make it a Garbage Release. I have never added a FILM entry.

"So what?" so when someone checks the film page to see if these releases have been added yet, they will decide that they have not, because they are not linked to the film. Then they will be added again. Then they will need to be merged.

I said they were good releases, but they all need to be edited.

I did edit a couple of them, but the main problem these days is that older releases that have no mention of the packaging can't be edited without that info.

Sorry about that, that's one of the limitations to adding a required field further down the line. With these ones you can select 'Other' from the packaging menu and request the original submitter to add the correct packaging type in the submission notes.

Two more users whose release submissions need to be linked to films.
The second user also tends to write the titles in ALL-CAPS which EK might appreciate.

Again i'm not saying these releases are garbage, but they do all need to be edited, and this has sorta become the thread for pointing that out.

Stemwinder7 is also using the comment function to add copy pasted stuff about the movies he added releases of.
His subs are also never linked to films + he adds written credits to the notes or via comment.
Oh....and his CAPS button seems to be broken.
A pure mess.

Speaking about garbage releases... Only info is Format, Packaging and Region. Nothing to check.

This user's submissions: https://www.filmo.gs/users/rotang-inc

I'll contact these users requesting more details, but I would also recommend leaving a polite note in the comments in the History section so the submitter can see where they need more detail on the specific submission.

https://www.filmo.gs/users/panadr

I'm not offended by the fact that they're listing porn; I'm offended by their shitty pics, lack of info, and the fact they won't mark their listings as sensitive.

Dude is listing pornographic films that feature an UNDERAGE Traci Lords

Aroused; Beverly Hills Copulator; Country Girl; It's My Body; Traci Takes Tokyo; We Love To Tease; Traci's Fantasies

NOT ACCEPTABLE, in my opinion.

PLUS "panadr" is attempting to sell these titles. Very risky situation for this site for facilitating these sales. Apparently "panadr" is shipping items from "zografou, Greece, Greece"

http://www.cybercc.gr/en/legislation/child-pornography/

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I've removed these and notified the user.

Just got my Caps Button fixed !
- But my question is: does anybody actually sell anything on Filmogs ?!!
Since I started listing in here, I've sold 40+ items on Discogs and have had absolutely no sales results in this mosh-pit full of angry and mostly unhelpful fellow contributors who show off their constant irritation at my junior league efforts.

Filmogs isn't big enough yet. That's the cut-and-dry answer.

More traffic means more opportunities. It's up to the users to make that happen. I don't see __ogs embarking on an expensive promotional campaign to self-advertise, particularly for a site still deeply under construction. Why should they? Discogs wasn't built overnight either, and a lot of what made it into what is is came from user (that means you) contributions.

If that really bothers you, or seems like too much "work" as someone trying to earn money through Filmogs, either find somewhere else to list things, or start contributing more and telling more people about this place on your own. No one owes you anything as a seller here, to be brutally frank.

@sTemwinder7 - I agree with morgue_sludge; right now, the crowd is more focused on adding releases than buying. Although I encourage you to continue adding titles. You have contributed some interesting LaserDisc titles that I wasn't familiar with.

in this mosh-pit full of angry and mostly unhelpful fellow contributors who show off their constant irritation at my junior league efforts.

This thread has never been about bashing other contributors, but I do think sometimes it shows the irritation towards “new” contributors who haven’t read the guidelines before adding. Personally I try to add comments on contributions before reporting them in this thread.
I wonder where the word “unhelpful” was based on. You’ll notice most of us are willing to help wherever we can. You can start threads in the forums or pm through Discogs. I’d like to encourage you to do just that. Especially since you’ve been adding some interesting stuff, but some of them need some adjustments.

"in this mosh-pit full of angry and mostly unhelpful fellow contributors who show off their constant irritation at my junior league efforts."

Maybe its because you've added about 176 releases at the moment and are still not able to link your releases to the corresponding Film or adding at least ONE identifier to your submissions.

Just my two cents.

...And don't even get me started on the GIGANTIC LASERDISC DATABASE watermarks, haha.

I've disabled all the watermarked images I've come across. If you see these, I encourage you to disable them and leave a comment in the History section stating why and requesting the contributor to upload an image of the original item.
Leaving a comment in the History section is generally the best way to notify a contributor who may not yet be well-versed on the guidelines or needs a reminder to add more data to their submissions.
We find most often when we contact contributors they're more than happy to receive feedback and just need a little more guidance. Please ensure we're keeping it civil and constructive so we can keep this community and database strong

Will do. Just discovered a way to get stronger images and will endeavor to use better information from here on out.

Great, thanks sTemwinder7

@stemwinder
Is there a reason why you are just ignoring the things that were pointed out by others and me?
Do you even read the comments to your submissions?
Pretty annoying, as you just keep doing without giving a s***.

  • link your subs to the corresponding film
  • link your subs to the corresponding film
  • link your subs to the corresponding film
  • Don’t add anything else to the title field - except the title (no format, no actors, no nothing)
  • Same goes for the ~ in your subs, stop using it
  • only upload pictures of the actual physical release
  • avoid adding redundant data
  • don’t add Film descriptions to the notes of a release and especially don’t use the comment function for that!!!
  • try to add as much unique data as possible

Thanks.

As falsepriest noted, please lets keep things civil and constructive here. Though many of the points made in this thread and your last comment @idefix23 are valid, friendliness and encouragement go further than hostility

Also, I think this type of feedback would be better served in the comment section of a submission rather than in a forum thread like this where the contributor may not see it

You are both right and i would agree BUT
i already commented to his submissions, in the comment section, repeatedly.
Since maybe about 3-4 weeks?

To me all hope is lost with this.

I really start to appreciate the voting system discogs has -.-

Thanks for making the effort, idefix23. We appreciate the guidance of newer contributors

This is starting to sound really sad.
I do intend to list within the parameters prescribed for all my submissions but lack the immediate skills to submit like a pro.
Uploading pictures of the actual physical release of a 12 inch laserdisc isn't likely as I don't a scanner that large.
Also, I've no idea how to link subs to the corresponding film.
So at this point am I looking at getting voted off this tiny island ?

You don’t need a scanner. I just take pics of my items with my phone, crop them and upload.

Also, I've no idea how to link subs to the corresponding film.

At the bottom of the release form it says “Add Film” if you add the correct film in that field your release is linked to the film. If you have any non-English films they will be added in the original language. If the film is not in the database yet, you should add both film and release.

So at this point am I looking at getting voted off this tiny island ?

I doubt that, maybe we all started on the wrong foot, but I’d like to encourage you to listen to the feedback given. There is a wiki with lots of information. There are a lot of experienced Filmogs users who are willing to help you out wherever we can. You can open a forum topic. Direct message a member through Discogs. Use the bubble on the bottom right to direct message staff, etc.

@sTemwinder7: have you read the wiki page: ‘Guide to Adding Releases’? I’m sure you can submit great Releases following these guidelines.
https://www.filmo.gs/wiki/Help-Add-Release

@staff: maybe a link to this guide can be presented to the user in the ‘Add Release’ submission form. Would also be very helpful for new users who may not be aware any guidelines exist.

Speaking of asking for assistance:
Would anyone happen to know a good example submission I could look at to figure out how to add a release which has the same film in both DVD & Blu-ray, and both of the formats have different duration, sound, aspect ratio etc.?

Here’s one. Maybe not a perfect example , but you get the idea. You can add all info in correct field and add between brackets if it is info for the DVD or Blu-ray.

I agree but from where does it need removing ?
Is there a link ??

It needs to be removed from Filmogs. Not a valid entry.

Not a film, needs to be removed.

Alright. How again is this entry actually connected to me ??
Because I never listed this and do not own this title.

@sTemwinder7: you're getting notified because you've posted on this thread before, not because you've done anything wrong regarding this entry. If you want to opt out, click that "following" button in the upper right corner.

Oh, ok. Sorry about that.

I’ve reported this user 2 months ago. I’ve sent him a pm on Discogs on how to improve his submissions and so did the staff according to this thread.

Thanks, I've removed this entry and followed up with the contributor
