for some time it is impossible to find the correct Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Somehow the correct just doesn't show up when adding a new release. Both Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (for copyright) and the Brand Metro Goldwyn Mayer don't show up.

This is from the duplicate companies thread:

Is there a possibility to not have the merged companies show up in search, delete them completely from the database?

Also I'm not sure what to do with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Home Entertainment as the correct spelling is not in the database.

It’s horrible to find the correct one. none of the correct show up when typing the correct company. sometimes i’ll use the ”Add One Like This” function for a total different entry to get the correct company.

Still not sure why incorrect company listings are not deleted.

Any staff care to comment on this issue? for now i decided to wait with adding my MGM dvd’s, since it’s simply impossIble to find the correct one in the releaseform.

The invalid companies should be deleted; RELEASES using the invalid company data should be edited by original indexer or the company field data should be removed until correct data can be input.

yes and now there is a MGM and new MGM home videos which are getting added.

argh which one correct.

i've asked staff to join this discussion. this has been a problem for at least a year.

well that would be good i have seen a few say [Merged] now but they still show up in the drop down bar as normal companies.

this is the mgm i was talking about.

https://www.filmo.gs/company/193998-mgm

but thanka to the staff sorting this out maybe the other mgm home videos i was talking about got deleted.

Apologies that this has lingered. Looking into this now. There's a couple of factors at play:

  1. The functionality that shows matching companies in the submission form only shows the top 10 matches.
  2. There are a lot of variations of MGM in the db, 53 to be precise.
  3. The search doesn't correctly discriminate on the hyphen. So it sees companies with titles Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as both matching the search term Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer equally well (the reverse is also true)
  4. People are not very consistent in whether they use the hyphen or not.

Taken together these factors mean that duplicates keep getting created, originals can't be found and people get annoyed.

I'm looking into the best way to handle this. Our thinking now is:

  1. The search should discriminate better on hyphenated words
  2. Company aliases need to be searchable
  3. Allow copy pasting of a company url or id to specify precisely which thing to link to.

We hope to have these factors addressed soon. Thanks for your patience.

I will go over the lists of duplicates and merge those in the meantime.

Still not sure why incorrect company listings are not deleted.

  • Merged submissions are kept around in case the merge is disputed, to prevent data loss. I guess this is less likely in the case of companies, but that's how the functionality works.
  • We use merging functionality to move all linked submissions (in this case releases) from the duplicate to the original
  • Merged submissions should not show up in search or anywhere else. They are only accessible by direct links.
    • If you see examples of merged submissions showing up in search or in the submission form. Do let us know.

yes please add company linking that would help out so much please please please.

We are still looking into this.

A small tip that might help in the meantime. If you are having trouble finding an exact match in the submission form dropdown you can copy and paste the url of the document you are looking for there and it will automatically select it.

So for instance, if the dropdown does not show the correct Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer You can paste https://www.filmo.gs/company/10502-metro-goldwyn-mayer into the company name field and the correct submission will link.

You can also use the id part (10502) or the slug (10502-metro-goldwyn-mayer) and the correct version should come up.

Hope this helps!

Is the suggested pages in the drop down list based on most used/linked?

That would lead to simplifying this problem, the most used page is the first option given.

no, that's just the whole problem. the correct version (as linked in the original post and the previous post by Kalli) does not appear in the drop down.

We just launched some further improvements to the submission form search. It should now be easier to find the correct MGM (and other credits, companies). Let us know if you still have problems or have questions.

Is that the larget noted duplicates for titles that pop up now?

Although it does seem to have "borked" the search for credits in films, most will not show up unless a full name is written, it could be seen as an improvement, but might lead to duplicate credits being made.

I don't understand how you all seem to expect users to know what the 'correct' MGM is, while at the same time asking them to enter information as it is on the packaging.

MGM has so many variants because their products have that many.

This is often due to the era of the printed material and the taxable entity that the parent corporation was using at the time. MGM is not the only one.

The credit pages should be set up similar to discogs' artists pages including variants/aliases and connections (members, parent and/or children companies, etc.).
Until they are, this problem will not go away.
