@BarryWallace Steve McQueen should be for the actor, Steve McQueen (2) for the Director and Steve McQueen (1) should be deleted. Any chance you could move your submissions to "Steve McQueen?"

Ok I think you already did.

Ok a few weren't done... Done.

Thanks!

Sorry i messed up and created a duplicate company.

@darksurprise: This is for credits duplicates!!!!
You can delete a double title by just using it for a new entry.

This topic is for duplicate credits. Please add duplicate movies and duplicate companies to the correct topic.

Just a reminder that you both need to move the credits to right profile or they wont delete it.

Please add duplicate movies and duplicate companies to the correct topic.

Where is the duplicate company topic?

Merged those dupes, thanks tsivihcra.

@Madir I'm not sure which one is better served as the origin here. Could you move the credits to the one that is correct (as per BarryWallace's suggestions).

Someone appears to have misspelt MGM Home Entertainement. It appears in various forms, with Inc. appended etc. This makes the dropdown option for this company cumbersome. Thanks

When I went to list my release of this film, I noticed what I thought were two releases of the same film. I didn't notice that one of these entries was a film; both entries had the same pictures. So I transferred the information I put on my "film" to the original film entry and added a poster from the original event. If you can get rid of my "film," I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Guys,

Here's a duplicate. One is the man's name in Hindi and the other is the man's name in English. Now, that there is the possibility of name variations, we don't need to have more than one credit for credit names that are originally in a script other than Latin.

Merged all of those, thanks everyone.

I've already merged the films under the incorrect entry into the correct one.

There is no need to do this by hand unless there are name variations, our merging functionality takes care of moving the linked releases or credits over. Apologies if this wasn't clear.

That doesn't eliminate the problem. One can still look up, say, "Davis Byrne" and if there is actually a "Davis Byrne" that needs to be added as a credit, a user might think that credit is valid and use it.

Same thing goes for all the incorrect/invalid companies. They still pop up as options when a user is adding data. Seems very strange to keep those available.

Couldn't all of these error entries be archived somehow but not be available as options for users?

That doesn't eliminate the problem. One can still look up, say, "Davis Byrne" and if there is actually a "Davis Byrne" that needs to be added as a credit, a user might think that credit is valid and use it.

Merging removes the duplicate from the dropdown in the form (and from other searches). For instance Davis Byrne does not show up in the dropdown anymore. If you see instances of merged duplicates showing up in the search please let us know.

Same thing goes for all the incorrect/invalid companies. They still pop up as options when a user is adding data. Seems very strange to keep those available.

They aren't kept available and they shouldn't show up in search or in the dropdown in the form. In fact you shouldn't see the duplicates anywhere unless you have a direct link. (An exception is the Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer, where indexing issues are causing problems, but we hope to have that fixed shortly).

Couldn't all of these error entries be archived somehow but not be available as options for users?

They shouldn't be available. Try any of the merged duplicates listed above. Only the original should show up in the submission form. If you see exceptions please let us know.

https://www.filmo.gs/credit/26641-lisa-film-karl-spiehs

In my opinion both are incorrect, since it’s a company. I think there should be a Company field on the Film form.

The second one is no company in this spelling. Karl Spiehs should be credited as producer seperately.

The second one is no company in this spelling. Karl Spiehs should be credited as producer seperately.

Yes, Karl Spiehs should be credited as producer, but Lisa Film shouldn’t. So both are incorrect. Lisa Film can be credited as Production Company on the release page.

I suggest to delete https://www.filmo.gs/credit/32097-yun-fat-chow

And keep
https://www.filmo.gs/credit/154106-chow-yun-fat

In Chinese, "last name" always comes first, and to have it inverted is creating a lot of confusion and dupes.
Films under https://www.filmo.gs/credit/32097-yun-fat-chow
Should be moved to

Cleaned the dupes:

Now with the main profile being correct, hopefully we will not get more dupes in the future (unless someone creates a profile in Chinese)

Not sure what is the consensus on Chow Yun Fat / Yun Fat Chow? Deleted or merged the other ones, thanks everyone.

Correct way of writing his name, as per Chinese rules but also on all releases is Chow Yun-fat.
The other way round is fully incorrect.
I do speak Chinese and edit many Chinese submissions on Discogs.

What I propose to maybe stop such a large influx of different duplicate credits is to have an A.K.A. section on an artist page to say what the person is otherwise known as. So when people are typing these credits in and not getting any results, it frustrates them. When you have at least something pop up under a different name, normally it drives somebody to think "is this the normal name that this person is known by?" and they investigate. Most likely this is the answer to their question and they'll pick it as their credit. Thereby reducing the amount of duplicate credits.

If something could be done similar to Discogs in that regard, that'd be sweet.

Not to mention, could it be possible to have a page function forums? It's a chore to either scroll to the bottom of this page or click to the bottom every time you want to put in an entry.

I know we had an earlier discussion on how if another credit with the same name pops up when you are editting credits that you shouldn't just select the "Create " option, but that you need to add a (#) after the credit so that you select "Create " to make sure that you don't in effect select adding the credit to the "match" which you didn't select. I experimented just a bit ago selecting "Create " option when there was another match, and it instead of creating a new credit entry, added the film to the older matching credit entry's list. Those that saw that discussion might do the right thing, but those who haven't which are probably most users here, will assume incorrectly that a newer credit with their entry was created, and many errors could linger unchecked.

Code should be fixed so that unless one explicitly selects another a iisted existing credit, that it should always create a new credit. Once this is done, perhaps a one time maintenance script should go through the credits data and verify that all of the credit films for a credit match a single person against a reference like IMDB, and print out an extra exceptions list to perhaps repair either manually or with automatically another script later after review. I'd love to help you do this sort of work there here in Portland. I suspect that many credit entries have in fact films from multiple different people with the same name on them now, which don't show up as "duplicate credits".

Ack... You folks ARE doing the right thing now. I was just checking the wrong credit entry. There were a couple of existing credit entry matches for different people when creating "Captain Nemo and the Underwater City" film entry, but one of them wasn't the one I thought was one, which appropriately was just one credit instead of two. New entries were created for James Hill and John Moore appropriately when selecting the "Create" entry, and not for Bill Fraser, which I had properly matched. Your code works fine now and it's great not having to put the (#) extensions on credit entries any more. Please remove the following incorrect credit entry. Thanks!

Why is this not common practice here? Such an easy way to get rid of duplicates, and you don't have to wait for staff.

Not good practice... unless the same user that made the dupe re-uses it.

If there is a dispute or something. That's what staff said a long time ago why THEY wouldn't just delete obvious duplicated, etc.

Let them handle it.

Why it is not a good practice? I know in the past only staff could get rid of the duplicates, but that's not the case anymore.

I'd rather have staff spend their time on improving the site functions than doing something that is taken care by the community on the other sites.

There are so many duplicates it's almost ridiculous. That is partially due to a poor search function, and the situation is not going to get any better until the search is improved.

But it's no big deal - just curious more than anything. I can keep on ignoring the duplicates and leave the reporting to those who enjoy it. :P

I can keep on ignoring the duplicates and leave the reporting to those who enjoy it. :P

That's part of the problem. Report the duplicates and then... MAYBE ...the staff will spend their time on fixing such issues.

The search function thing has been a problem for years.

I know in the past only staff could get rid of the duplicates, but that's not the case anymore.

Ummm, how do users permanently delete duplicates? I suppose one could hijack someone's entry and completely repurpose it, but that doesn't solve the underlying problem.

I suppose one could hijack someone's entry and completely repurpose it, but that doesn't solve the underlying problem.

I would assume that even the current method is not meant to be a permanent solution.

Once the underlying problem is fixed and the database won't be spammed with duplicates, any method fixing the duplicates will hopefully become mostly obsolete.

I just think that repurposing the entries would be a lot faster and more efficient way to reduce the number of duplicates, and more importantly a community-based way. No need to wait around for staff to do anything.

The search function thing has been a problem for years.

Yes, but it seems to be just getting worse... it can't even find the entry for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Report the duplicates and then... MAYBE ...the staff will spend their time on fixing such issues.

Duplicates have been reported for years. And considering the attempts made at sorting certain companies, the staff should aware of the situation.

Just getting caught up on dupes here. Sorry for the tardiness, summer vacation time.

It is interesting how the handling of duplicates has evolved on the different sites. On Bookogs it is indeed mostly handled by the community itself while here its evolved into these large threads.

Here's how I see it:

  • Empty duplicates (for example credits that just have a title, are clearly a typo and so on) can be "recycled" like mirva suggests and like Bookogs has been doing.
  • For duplicates with more data or where the duplicate status might be up for debate it can be discussed on the history page or reported in the forums.
  • Submissions that are linked to many other submissions (credits with many films attached) can be more easily moved by admins. As we have a tool that automatically moves the linked films over and doesn't require editing tens or hundreds of submissions to point the dupe or the original.

Does that make sense? How does it sound to you?

On a related note, we now have "revert to version" functionality. Which should be helpful in case of disputes. You can find this by going to the history page of a submission and viewing a specific version of a submission

Submissions that are linked to many other submissions (credits with many films attached) can be more easily moved by admins. As we have a tool that automatically moves the linked films over and doesn't require editing tens or hundreds of submissions to point the dupe or the original.

That is simply not the case. I have gone through the entire duplicate companies thread and there are many "merged" entries that still have releases linked to them. Not the "pending" ones, but entries that have been officially merged by staff.

I say letting users have the final say on a duplicate entry is a bad idea.

EK wrote_:

That should not be happening and should be less likely to happen now after improvements to the merging functionality. If you have specific examples, please link them in the duplicate companies thread. I will be going over the companies thread and merging dupes there in the coming days.

I say letting users have the final say on a duplicate entry is a bad idea.

Why? The history will be there and the changes are reversible and up for discussion so they aren't final in that way.

How do you add a credit that is marked sensitive, too a film and not create a duplicate.

This happened to me and i had to reuse the dupe cause someone marked the original credit sensitive.

Now there is one named "Lisa Comshaw" what do i do, untick the sensitive or leave her out of the film "The Nurse"

Not a duplicate but a bad credit that should be removed...

https://www.filmo.gs/credit/235712-dylan-purcell

Dylan Purcell is the role of an actor not the actor himself and should be removed. I'm fixing the film listing for the film that credits him before adding a release for it.

merged those, thanks everyone!

Here is one that can be deleted for being a fictional character
https://www.filmo.gs/credit/323041-bugs-bunny

Shouldn't the alleged "correct" and "duplicate" credits be discussed first, before deciding which is the duplicate that should be deleted? This is how it works in discogs. Many of these have name variations that are not in themselves duplicates. The preferred primary name should be the one that is most "relevant", as the discogs guidelines specify (https://support.discogs.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005054753-Database-Guidelines-2-Artist#Artist_Name_Variation_ANV). Isn't this what kalli is saying above?

I believe the logic is that the earliest created page (the one with the lower number) is the "original" and any created after that are duplicates to be merged with that one.

I do agree that the name they are commanly known as should be the title of the page, however since there is no way to have the variants of an individual's names listed on their credits yet, it makes sence to use their full names as a universal base source.

Just adding a Chinese film and was trying to take care to not create duplicates as mentioned up further the page, where a pattern of not reversing the order of the name from imdb listings of films will likely get you in trouble, since IMDB follows the western naming convention of putting the surname last, even though Chinese convention has it being first. Wikipedia and a lot of other sites seem to be better about helping put in proper naming of them. Perhaps a note on that to those used to using entry from IMDB listings for Chinese name credits in the notes would be helpful.

Here’s some duplicate entries I found on the site where some have had this same problem and other new ones should probably be merged to whatever convention we feel is right.

Would like to propose for the future that perhaps if we have actors' names in their native language, which is fine, that we currently put in their profile the English text name in the description, and perhaps like we have film aliases now that in the future will get searched for matches, maybe name aliases as well to avoid duplicates such as this. With a good alias system, perhaps we could even have other languages as well, so that when people add other films with their name in a different language, that can be found as well through searches.

I'm also adding both an imdb link and a native language site link to biography pages of these actors to help identify them and their works for both native speakers and those trying to add them in other film contexts.

Yeah its been up for a while and mentioned a few months ago in this thread.

Only mentioned it as I saw it going through the Bond films, setting their category and country right, remove it from all the pages so it can be repurposed.

Maybe instead of posting them in here, if there are credits that are considered a duplicate and are not linked to a film there could be a thread for credits that can be repurposed instead of listing them here to be removed.

Yes, that's what i do, well i haven't reused dupe credits for a while as i haven't needed to create any though i think i might reuse some soon.

I've done that with a couple of duplicates I created, I'd suggest if you replace a dupe with a credit not currently listed, addd IMDb/Wikipedia links, basically enough to say that it should be a legit credit.

Just created this duplicate without aliases for foreign spellings that can be spotted in credit searches. Hope we get that in soon. Is there a way we can put in a redirect to the right credit in some fashion that are there for other credits?

Thanks all, these are all merged now and removed a couple of those fictional characters.

I think these two might be dupes, but only because the pic on the older credit with no films attached and the one I had which I just found a pic for might be the same person as this one has a wrestling history in addition to acting credits.

Older one:
https://www.filmo.gs/credit/332740-ken-anderson-2

Newer one I just created with two external links, one which has it's pic that I'd just found.
https://www.filmo.gs/credit/360399-ken-anderson

This Ken Anderson credit is a totally different person.

https://www.filmo.gs/credit/73445-ken-anderson

ken anderson 2 is a wrestler also known as Mr Anderson, mr kennedy.

the picture looks like the wrestler on ken anderson (3) though by imdb they are different people.

no the ken andersons are not dupes.

i fixed (3) up removing vodkast link as that links to the wrestler, though (3) is a actor from the 1980's

the wrestler ken anderson (2) did not start wrestling till 2002 and was born in 1976 unless he was an actor at the age of 4 acting as a CIA Agent i don't think a 4 year old is a possible to be a CIA Agent.

Jo_Store wrote:

The link you removed that had his pic also points to him being in the film I had just created that is credited to Anderson (3). Now looking at it further, it looks like not all of the credits are proper. It does credit him for "Behind Enemy Lines", an that points to Ken Anderson's IMDB link that corresponds to Ken Anderson (2).

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1867747/

But it looks like it is flawed in pointing him to Ken Anderson in "The Kidnapping of the President", which is a different Ken Anderson, and the Robin Hood Ken Anderson it credits him for, is actually Ken Anderson (1) if you look it up on IMDB.

Looks like you corrected it correctly. Perhaps add this imdb link to Ken Anderson (2), to reduce future confusion between them.

https://www.filmo.gs/credit/26227-mehmet-kurtulus
https://www.filmo.gs/credit/187091-mehmet-kurtulus

The first one looks properly spelled as "Mehmet Kurtuluş" (pronounced Mehmet Kurtulush" in Turkish), where the imdb link has his name improperly spelled, and therefore I added the sinematurk link to show that this entry is properly spelled. I used to live in Turkey while I was young, which makes this instance more visible to me. Probably want to make sure that when we check for duplicates, and let people entering basic English letters have them equivalenced with those same characters with umlats and cedillas as the case here are equivalenced to help avoid duplicates being created, as there will be other credits with mispelled names like imdb had here.

Interesting. I tried to correct this on imdb, but it wouldn't let me saying that ş charcters aren't permitted, which is probably why his name and probably many other Turkish named individuals also have their names mispelled there. We probably should check through our DB, and correct likely many other credit names that are currently mispelled too, since apparently filmogs ability to have foreign names is superior to imdb now. :)

Corrected another credit entry and added a sinematurk link for him to show the proper spelling for his name that imdb doesn't.

I found a few other entries with improper spelling from what appears to be imdb sourced names. Wikipedia gets it right, and we should probably review the database to see if other credits have problems too. Here's a letter from some frustrated people in the Turkish community on this problem three years ago with imdb, with three different "not allowed" characters that are causing problems for them.

https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/three-letters-of-turkish-alphabet-g-i-s-please-help-to-add-these-letters-to-your-site

Another duplicate created because of imdb spelling bug for certain characters. We could help here by making sure that searches equivalence those letters like (c and ć in this case) that are going to happen frequently when users look to find duplicate credits with these mispelled names. This works at the top search engine entry, but still not when entering in credits for a film entry page.

Found a third duplicate for this credit that is stored under a Russian name here...

https://www.filmo.gs/credit/76295-ingeborga-dapkunaite

It looks like the two good ones need to be merged. Updated the external links on both so that there will be references to the many different ways her name is spelled.

I think this calls in to question perhaps the need to establish a precedent sometime later as to which "base language" to store the credit under? It looks like this was originally stored in English text name before it was changed to a Russian name. Once searching can look through perhaps a list of "aliases" for a credit down the road, which can perhaps be mined in an automated fashion by going through the various film records and extracting the name variant values that might be stored for a given credit. Then in the future when entering films, the base name of a credit and it's aliases can be used to spot duplicates to keep something like this three-way duplicate from happening due to different spellings of names and character set messes from imdb. A good reason to populate as much of the specific different alias values from another site when entering a film for the film itself for an equivalent type of search with aliases searched for as well.

Just created this dupe when I hadn't noticed the Russian spelled credit earlier...

You could always reuse the duplicate for another credit, just rename it.

I've also noticed you added birth dates into notes, if you open Events and select "Born" you can add that info into the profile and it will add their birth date under their search name, not sure you knew this already, I just noticed on one credit you updated that you pit it in the notes.

Thanks for reminding me of reusing credits. Just did on this duplicate. On the event entry for birth and death dates. I might put those in if it would allow one to have specific city and state locations and not just countries. It's easiest now just to cut and paste from imdb to put in profile or construct in a similar fashion from other sources if it isn't there, which is pretty consistent with all other credit entries they have.

It's easiest now just to cut and paste from imdb to put in profile or construct in a similar fashion from other sources if it isn't there, which is pretty consistent with all other credit entries they have.

You can copy/paste the location into that section, I just use the base country since I'm mostly cleaning up these pages.

Hi all,
I'm working through some merges here and came into the

I think this calls in to question perhaps the need to establish a precedent sometime later as to which "base language" to store the credit under? It looks like this was originally stored in English text name before it was changed to a Russian name.

That's a great point. We can defer to the Discogs guidelines around choosing an Primary Artist Name (PAN). I would say if the majority of the Actor's credits appear on releases in their native language, and/or they're not particularly well-known outside of their native country/language then we go with the native language spelling (Russian, in this case). Seems like these all fit in that category so I think they can be merged into the Russian credit page, but let me know if you think otherwise.

All others are merged now, thanks!

I know I've been going through my credits and adding DUPE to the end of then, I don't want this to be a common practice for others to pick up, I'm just going through all the credits I've made/adopted, adding sources and events and any doubles I've made I'm going to go back and turn them into different credits.

I actually think thats good it used to happen on here someone before thewho used to do it, he or she done it to both companies and credits other users like myself and others would then reuse them.

I've seen those about, they did also include the link to the original in the notes. I'm not against using it beyond my own list but if that were to happen I'd be for including a link to the original in the notes.
